One letter at a time…

At Studio B we have been recently experimenting with making our own ‘hand cut’ wooden type. Our first attempt was with a small plank of Douglas Fir – a UK grown softwood, with an open enough grain for carving and an ability to accommodate the compression stress that printing demands. We had previously experimented with medium density fiberboard (MDF) but after a number of pressings the edges became unstable and eventually broke down, impacting on the definition of the print.

Size is not an issue in our letter manufacture as luckily we have our huge Soldan Proof Press for printing such an enormous letter – we were very pleased with the final, printed outcome. Although there were acute differences in hardness across the wood – the darker grain was much stronger that the light, resulting in slight waves when sanding by hand.

We are looking to source some tighter grained hardwoods for our next experiments – end grain Maple would be ideal but we have to find a local supplier, which is at present being very difficult. If you know any timber suppliers or a good joinery shops located in Somerset who would be able to provide wood and machine it to the exact size of 23.32mm please get in contact.
